The ten death zones
A forensic taxonomy of corporate failure. Each zone is a distinct failure architecture — a pattern that has recurred across industries, geographies, and decades. Every company in The 198 carries one as its primary cause of death.
On classification
Every company receives one Primary Death Zone — the zone whose removal would most likely have prevented the failure. Up to two Secondary Zones are assigned where they materially accelerated the collapse without originating it.
DZ10 (The Sovereign Paradox) has zero primary assignments across 198 cases. Its entry criteria require the complete absence of structural amplifiers. In practice, when something external kills a business, it almost always exploits a fragility that already existed. The framework is not an alibi machine.
